About this guide
This is a curated guide to landmark video games: what made each one matter, and the practical way to play it today. It exists because "best games" lists usually copy each other without saying what a game actually is, whether a new player can still enjoy it, or where the facts came from.
How the collection works
Every game here answers to the same four tests: influence (did it change how games are designed or played), craft (do its systems, writing, or feel still hold up), stay (do people still play, watch, and talk about it), and start-ability (can a new player actually enjoy it today). A game doesn't need all four at maximum — it needs the first one beyond argument.
Where the facts come from
Every factual claim on a game page — release dates, developers, editions, where a game can be played now — traces to a linked source shown at the bottom of that page. Each entry records the date its sources were last checked, and "play it today" guidance only describes editions that were available when the source was checked.
Editorial judgments — why a game matters, how a newcomer should approach it — are the guide's own and are written as such. Nothing here is sponsored, and no purchase link is an affiliate link.
Keeping it honest
Digital stores change what they sell, and platform libraries come and go. When a "play it today" note no longer matches reality, the entry's source gets re-checked and the page corrected rather than quietly left behind. Corrections follow the facts, not the hype calendar.
